1851 | Jean Bernard Leon Foucault presents his pendulum, which can swing in any vertical plane. Slow rotation in the pendulum’s oscillating movement is a proof of Earth rotating underneath it.
1930 | Tadeusz Lucjan Gronowski designs the logo for LOT Polish Airlines. The modern silhouette of a crane is simple in form, dynamic and light. Years later, the company announces its plans to change it, but abandons them after protests of both employees and passengers. The logo adorns airplane stabilizers to this day.
1958 | The Atomium, a monumental model of an iron crystal designed by André Waterkeyn, is constructed for the Brussels World Expo. Its name derives from the words atom, referring to the shape of the structure, and aluminum, as this metal initially coats the spheres. It is to be destroyed after the Expo, but the city authorities decide to preserve it.
1879 | Thomas Edison patents an electric source of light: the electric bulb. To this day, retro light bulbs with filament bear his name.
1931 | The construction of Villa Savoye, a modernist icon designed by Le Corbusier and built according to his “Five Points of a New Architecture”, is completed. It is filled with long, black, curved pipes and round details. Light coming in through horizontal windows illuminates the interior in a precisely calculated manner.
1923 | Wassily Kandinsky paints Composition VIII in his period defined as architectural. The painting is composed of circles of various sizes, triangles and intersecting straight and curved lines.
